What would have taken only a few days, it's turning into forever. I hate to post so much WIPs but it seems like that is all i have time for these days. Even with the Christmas brake finished i did not get my self to much personal work.

I know he was not this muscular in the show, but he was made up to look so in the posters so I went more for that..even more so. Maybe what he might have looked like on the 2nd season since he mentioned he wanted to bulk up a bit more.

One day this will be finished lol. Hopefully when Resident Evil Retribution is out i'll get some clearance to show some of the stuff I did. That will be a nice change of pase from all this work in progress stuff.

After watching BBC's Human Planet I was inspired to do a tribal character. The head decor is from the Mursi Tribe in Ethiopia the neck rings are not common if at all among them but for now I thought it would look cool.

Eyelashes still need to be added but for now this is the temporarily finished piece... until i get some nice mech armor on him.... whenever I get that kind of time. Underneath are my different light passes. I also used an Ambient occlusion pass, a depth pass and a mate pass. All textures hand painted.

Well my plan was to work on some fantasy creature, maybe a centaur or something, but I felt I wanted to try something else before that. Something very personal and close to my heart. My Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Of course no one knows what he looked like exactly but that is not my concern as much as the significance. I just started it, and there is a body too. My plan is to do a Zbrush sculpt of Jesus on the cross. This is very near and dear to me so I want it just right. A ton to do still, But i feel its up to a good start.

I have a few other projects in the works that will be coming up shortly, but meanwhile I am learning more about skin shaders, lighting, rendering, and compositing. I'm playing with different looks, I was trying a more photo real approach at first, and i still might, but for now decided to try a more high end video game cinematic look.

VFX Shot for THE FIND

It's been a bit since I posted something new, I have been a tad busy for a little over a week, working on a shot for Fun Size Studio, a UK based studio. This was an independent short that is for a competition for Parallel Lines Cinema and Phillips where the finals will be judged by Ridley Scott. Now I only did a bullet that got froze in the air and was made glowing by the character, but it was a great learning experience. I did the Modeling, Texturing, Shaders, Lighting, Rendering and Compositing of the bullet, which I passed down to be composited with the final plates in a very cool shot by Miodrag who did an awesome job putting it in the shot. Underneath you can find the link to the film, and a few images.

I believe that for the competition, you are given the same script every time and see what different people and studios interpret it as. You can watch it in HD in 1080p

In the final shot, since it was shorter than initially thought, the bullet appears already as it glows and the glow fades to the actual look not the burned out one.

Arm and Textures Re-worked

Re-working the armor and arms to make it as good quality as I can and until I am happy with the design. Since I'm kind of just making things up as I go along, It's taking a little longer, but it is a good experience since it is teaching me to thing of different modeling methods on the spot as I get each idea for the next bit of it. I also re-worked the textures, can't make up my mind on which color pallet looks better, but i feel this one does. Can't wait to finish this, since I ave 2 other projects in mind I would like to start.

The beauty of doing personal work, is that I can go back and keep tweaking it as I please. After some feedback, and such, I felt like his head was a tad stylized, yet the reality of it made it seem weird. So I went back to re-work it, yet again. This piece I'm really enjoying so I do not want to just settle, I want it as good looking as I can get it. So I went and re-shaped his head, nose, cut back on some over emphasized details, etc. Working with Zbrush it has kind of become a trend to put as much detail and over emphasize certain features, which works well in video games, but not as much if you want a photo real piece or a digital character for a live action film. Also re-working textures and shaders meticulously. So this is still in progress, but the difference i feel is better now. Feel free to let me know what you think.

I started the texturing on the armor (a lot to go still) and I thought as I work through it I'd put a little bit of the process on how I get to the final result. Though this is not final here... well maybe for the bit that is textured, though even that is still in the works. Hope this is helpful.

Just a quick pose test in Zbrush so that I may get the feeling for the character. The "T" pose was getting very boring to stare at. I will have it more worked and fully rendered in Maya soon enough.

Some more testing. I still have to export the normal map for the belt, and make the textures for it. Still have a lot to go but things are moving relatively well. I also have to tweak the normal map for the cloth folds. Most things will be using a combination of normal and bump mapping and the gladiator will be using displacement for the sake of getting the best results for him.

A few days of work painting textures and playing with mental Ray's SSS Fast Skin to get it to look how I want. NOTE* Textures are still in progress, still have to blend seams. Shader is still in the works. Hope to get it as real looking as possible, but none the less I'm preety happy with this start. Textures are hand painted in photoshop and touched up in Zbrush.

2 Day Demo at Chuck Gamage

Well we had 2 days to show what we can do at Chuck's and here is a little taste. These renders are my personal ones I did for fun. The actual renders will be handled by lighting and rendering master Dave. I had a chance to do the digital sculpting and texturing which I had a blast with. Trying to convince Chuck to open a VFX department. Also A new rhino will be up shortly that will be in my 4th yr film.....but think more along the lines of the rhino in 300.

Some rig I am working on for the werewulf creature. It will have a muscle system with all the major muscles in the body. I'm really starting to Love this stuff.

Well what started as me being boared...ended up my second atempt at speed sculpting in Zbrush. I started with a sphere and more or less 5 hours later ended with this. there are still a few problems I would like to fix, but I don't know if it's worth it. I might try my hands at another. Plus I don't have too much free time.

No matter how much of a brake I need, I can't pry my self from this passion. Here is the next work in progress inspired by the Lycans in Underworld. These are just screen grabs since I did not see a purpose in a fancy render at this stage. This is mainly 3DS Max with a tad bit of massaging the polys in Zbrush. However it will be a highly detailed Zbrush project by the end.

Just something that i whiped up for the portfolio using an old model I made. It is still in works since I got a nice concept in my head of an ancient war that left the future of mankind in parel. Only the remains of the ancients are still around and they posses a technology that will unlock seecrets of how to save humanity. Who knows.... maybe I'll develop it for my 4th year film.....

About 4 Hours in Zbrush

Work in progress for a Literature class where we have to do an interpretation of a character. I got Scrooge after the visit of the spirits. I wanted an angry conflicted and inner pain cry. As he realised the errors of his way. With the other stuff I'm working on I don't have much time so I used an old base mesh I had done in Max and Zbrushed it for about 4 hours. Still have quite a bit of detail to add in the future.

This was something i whiped up in about 4 days or so. It was more or less a learning experience for unwrap UVs. And also a lighting learning experience. It is still in progress, so aside from still texturing some objects and tweaking some textures, some things might also get added/removed/tweaked etc. (touch ups in photoshop)

The Clothing/Armor Process Begins

Well so the process of freestyleing some atire has begun. With no plan except one pic i drew inspiration from I'm adding a piece at a time. There are even underware on this model although they may never get seen. (meddieval/primative undervare that are animal skin held with string) I was going and probably still am going to Zbrush it in the second half of the summer; but for now I wanted to see what kind of detail can I get without the help Zbrush just yet.

I know it's been a while since I've posted anything, I've been busy with some freelance work I didn't have much time for personal work. But by staying up a few nights until 6am lol i managed to find some time. Here is some VERY early progress of what started out as an idea for a still image of a bridge, and turned into...well.....that. After i lay the foundation for the whole thing, I will add the fine detail. I'm aiming for......well.....I finally saw Beowulf (which is the movie of all movies) but ya now that I have seen that.....I know what I'm aiming for as a finished product lol. Well this will be a learning experience more than anything, in how to get or try to get that kind of result.

Well..... it's starting to shape up more and more. I made it a bit cartoonier with offset drawers, table has more character, the top of the fridge is bigger than the bottom, etc. It needed to compliment the character a bit better, but i did not want to take it too far and look like a children's animation. So after studying The Incredibles and Rattatouille, i think i found a happy medium. We'll see how it works out.

This is my kitchen for Farrukh's 4th year film. He does the characters, i model his sets, props and maybe texture it. This is my texturing and lighting, he might leave the texturing...or at least some. We’ll see how it matches his character and story. Because it was cartoonier at first but it could go the way of Ratatouille...realistic sets and props with cartoony characters. Time will tell. The lighting he will re-do to match his film idea, which is at night. I appreciate the fact that he gave me almost complete freedom in how I want it to look.
